A Whole New MindThis page is for my students who are reading
A Whole New Mind, by Daniel Pink.
His website is at: http://www.danpink.com/
From the inside of the cover of the book:
"A groundbreaking guide to surviving, thriving and finding meaning in a world rocked by outsourcing of jobs abroad and the computerization of our lives.
Lawyers. Accountants. Radiologists. Software engineers. That's what our parents encouraged us to become when we grew up. But Mom and Dad were wrong. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind. The era of "left brain" dominance, and the Information Age that it engendered, are giving way to a new world in which "right brain" qualities-inventiveness, empathy, meaning-predominate."
and later:
"Your future will depend on your answers to three questions... We must look carefully at what we do and ask ourselves:
Can someone overseas do it cheaper?
Can a computer do it faster?
Am I offering something that satisfies the nonmaterial, transcendent desires of an abundant age?"
A review of his six senses:
"not just function, but also design".. "create" products that are " beautiful, whimsical or emotionally engaging
"not just argument but also story" your ability to create a compelling narrative of products, services ...
"not just focus but also symphony" to see the big picture
Sid Ceasar: "The guy who invented the wheel was an idiot. The guy who invented the other three, he was a genius."
wholistic attorneys... poets as managers... grasping relationships within relationships
"self made millionaires are four times more likely than the rest of the population to be dyslexic"... (Sally Shaywitz) they are " intuitive and excel at problem solving, seeing the big picture, and simplifying."
"not just logic but also empathy" using intuition, knowing what make people tick and therefor being able to care for others and forge relationships. Most women have brains that are hardwired for empathy and L directed thinking, but remember, we need androgynous minds that work both ways.
"not just seriousness but also play" humor, games and laughter make you healthier and create a better workplace (and classroom) and product
design video games to teach everything ... Einstein: "Games are the most elevated form of investigation"
"not just accumulation but also meaning" " 13 percent of homes purchased today are second homes...the United States has more cars than licensed drivers"
Virginia Postrel:
" The United States spends more on trash bags than ninety other countries."
He quotes from research by Dr. Martin E.P Seligman: the things that contribute to happiness are being married, satisfying work, a rich social network, avoiding negativity. The things that don't matter include more money, education or good weather, where you live.
some links he mentions no longer function, but I found replacements
