first aid scenariosYou are responsible for being able to complete the following first aid scenarios.
A secondary assessment using SAMPLE and a head-to-toe exam for an adult (or a toe-to-head for a child).
This will start with (page 141-2) sizing up the scene, performing an initial assessment (how to get consent is on page 7), summoning EMS personnel if needed and then the secondary assessment (page 216, 239 and Simple secondary survey study sheet).
----------------------------
For the first aid scenarios below you will need to list/describe:
initial steps taken, such as calling for backup coverage if necessary,
describe the injury or illness, including signs and symptoms,
explain the care steps provided, including summoning EMS personnel, if appropriate
and explain any follow-up instructions given to the vcitim.
You will role play some of these in class.
----------------------------
First Aid Scenario 1: You are on duty lifeguarding at an outdoor pool. A child comes to you saying that she was
just in the concession area eating a snack when she was stung by a bee. Her parent is swimming laps
in the adult lap swim lane.
Don't forget, you will need to get consent from a parent/guardian (how to get consent is on page 7). See page 230 for insect stings info.
First Aid Scenario 2: You are on break when an adult tells you that his friend is not feeling well and needs
help. The patron tells you that he is wearing a diabetic ID bracelet.
Basic steps for sudden illness and info about diabetic illness are on page 218.
First Aid Scenario 3: You are on a break in the lifeguard room. Through the window, you notice a patron on
the deck who appears to be having a seizure.
See page 219.
First Aid Scenario 4: You are hosing down a section of the deck as part of your secondary responsibilities. A
regular patron approaches and tries to ask you a question. Her speech seems impaired and you
cannot understand what she is saying.
See page 220.
First Aid Scenario 5: You are on duty as a lifeguard. Your guard station is on the deck at the shallow end of the
pool. An adult is exiting the pool using the ladder, then slips and hits his mouth on the railing. When
you approach the victim, you notice that he is missing a tooth, which he holding in his hand, and
bleeding from the mouth.
See page 225.
