searchable faculty websitesIn early 2005, after a year-long hiatus, the De Anza faculty websites became searchable on Google again, and therefore at the De Anza home page.
As a result we have the opportunity to use our faculty websites to increase enrollment and add to the prestige of De Anza.
PLUS it is now possible to include a note in the online schedule of classes directing students to your website for extra information.
An actual clickable link can be created.
Student retention is likely to be improved if students know more about a class before they enroll.
Further elucidation:
Potential students who search at the De Anza home page for the subject of one of your pages will now find that page.
Anyone who searches at Google for info on a subject we teach and write about at our websites can eventually find us.
For example, if you search at Google for lifeguard training my website page about lifeguard training shows up, usually on one of the first listings. People searching for the cost of a lifeguard certification will find I list all the local prices, because the De Anza class is always a lower cost for more certifications. In the process of listing local prices I also listed names of cities, therefore searches for lifeguard training classes in specific local cities bring people to my site.
The world is coming to our door. I have seen searches/hits from over 60 foreign-country Google search engines. (Hits are visitors from a search engine or other referral, some of whom might not have actually read much once they got to your site and realized it was not what they needed, some of whom might have stayed around and read many of your pages.)
Most are from Canada, the UK and Australia. There are often some from India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Germany. The foreign country codes used at Google are at the bottom of this page.
Other websites are linking to us.
Instructors at a Texas College and an eastern secondary school linked to History of swimming section as homework for their students.
CSU Stanislaus linked to Oxygen administration quick facts for a math project.
An online traffic school linked to a Outdoor Club page on driving in bad weather.
An English As A Second Language school in Paris, France linked to swimming vocabulary as a homework assignment.

To see an example of a note in the online schedule of classes sending students to a faculty website, go to the De Anza schedule of classes at:
http://www.deanza.fhda.edu/schedule/ click on fall, winter or spring quarter and follow through to the complete listing for either HLTH 57A or HLTH 57E.

Now that we are more visible, it's time to do a little housekeeping. For many faculty it would only take a half hour to update your site. Erase that note you made to "add some text here." Change references from specific quarters/years to more general ones so you don't have to update everything as often.
If you have more time, whatdaya know good? What subject in your classes do you have brilliant ideas about that are not substantial enough to publish in book form, but could be published at your website?
If you have more time, save a tree in your lifetime. Teach from your site. Online homework assignments can save De Anza printing money and can have lavish numbers of color photos. Here are some examples from my site:
Lifeguard backboarding project
backboarding mistakes quiz 1 page one
Should lifeguards wear cowboy boots?
Whose fault...the lifeguard or the manager/management?

More for Manilla websites:
Your referers page at Manilla sites lists the referrals in the last 24 hours from whatever source: a search engine, or someone who has linked to your site, for example.
To find your referers page, when you are logged in as an editor, add the words:
/stats/referers
to the end of your homepage URL.
Example:
http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/donahuemary/stats/referers
Here are some possibilities you might find at your referers page:
http://gsearch.fhda.edu/search?site=Main_Crawl
or
http://gsearch.fhda.edu/search?q
is a search at the De Anza home page that led someone to one of your pages
http://faculty.deanza.edu/?letter (and the first letter of your last name)
is a search someone made at the De Anza faculty websites list for your name
http://frontier.userland.com/xmlAggregator
This was explained to me as: someone has subscribed to a service that regularly looks at your website and tells them every time you have added a page or otherwise changed your site.
http://images.search.yahoo.com
is the result of someone's search for a photo that led them to click on one of yours.

If you put your mouse cursor on the referral it will often spell out the whole referral subject, and most of the time you can click on the referral and go to the search they made.
There you will see where your page on that subject ranks at that search engine, and you might find other pages worth checking out.

To see how many total hits each of your top 50 pages have had, add the words:
/stats/mostReadMessages to your home page URL
Example:
http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/donahuemary/stats/mostReadMessages
If you find yourself short on time to update your site regularly, this will tell you which pages are the most read and could be the most important to keep up-to-date.
