staff first aid classThis webpage is to introduce staff members to the 'blended learning' first aid class they are enrolling in and give potential reading assignments/study guides.
The course has two parts, one session online that each participant does at their own pace/convenience, and one group skills session. Ideally we schedule so that everyone will meet to complete the skills session within two weeks of finishing the online work.
Whether you have had previous first aid training or not, the partially online format is ideal. You can go through the material at your own pace and watch/review any portions more than once if you want to.
The college Health Services staff were the first to try this at De Anza. Health Services Coordinator Mary Sullivan said about the class:
"I wanted to extend my appreciation and thanks for the blended on-line first aid class our Health Service Staff took in April. It allowed flexibility in completing each topic on-line and hands-on experience to practice what we learned. The book was very rich with information, illustrating accurate pictures and logical progression. The pretest allowed a quick testing of knowledge, to progress on to testing, for those with a strong medical background. But some staff elected to work through the full tutorial, and gain greater knowledge about specific topics that were of interest to them. Your new course is a fast and efficient way to bring training to our staff that met each individual at their level of knowledge and offered levels beyond the standard for those interested.
Thanks,
Mary

The purpose of the American Red Cross Blended Learning First Aid program
course is to give individuals in the workplace and the community the knowledge and skills
necessary to recognize and give basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or illness until
emergency medical personnel arrive and take over. It is not truly complete training as it does not include any information on dealing with victims who are not breathing, are choking or do not have a pulse; for that you are encouraged to take a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course.
These are the Red Cross certification requirements
.. Individually complete the approximately 2 1/2 hour online session (length depending in part on your previous experience, computer and internet connection speed). (One participant who had been a first aid instructor found that she was able to finish the online session in less than an hour.)
.. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions of the online final exam.
.. At the end of the online session, the participant prints out a proof of completion certificate to
bring to the skills session to verify that s/he has passed and/or the instructor gets verification from the Red Cross.
.. Attend and participate in the approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hour group skills practice and assessment session. Please wear
comfortable clothing as you will be lying on the floor part of the time.
.. Demonstrate competency in all required skills. If anyone has difficulty performing a skill we will take the time to correct the problem before the end of the skills session.
Upon successful completion each
participant will receive an American Red Cross First Aid certificate, valid for 2 years.

If we have an enhanced first aid class, with extra material, some groups work in part with:
Simple secondary survey study sheet
fast, basic neurological exam
(If you have never had first aid training before, I recommend reading the text and completing the online sessions before you read the above webpages.)
Citizen CPR training can be added.
